BACK TO SCHOOL EXAMS

It’s time to get ready for those kiddos to head back to school, and their eye exam should definitely be a part of the school checklist! August is National Children’s Vision Month bringing awareness to the perfect time for kid’s exams. Instead of waiting for the report card to reflect that your child can’t see as clearly in class or doing homework, let’s get them in for an exam BEFORE the issues occur. Did you know that one in four children struggle through some type of uncorrected visual problem? And that is not including eye strain or eye muscle fatigue, which is becoming more and more common as tablets and electronics are being introduced into the classroom even earlier now. As we know, vision is key to success in the classroom. Let’s face it, in order to learn well, you first have to see well! With kids, it can be challenging to know or recognize any visual problems. Not to mention, they might not be able to tell you when something is blurry since this vision is all they’ve ever known.

Some parents may rely on an annual school screening to tell them when their child’s vision is lacking. Although those screenings are helpful for some, around 75% of children with vision problems fall through the cracks of those screenings, especially if the screening is not performed by an optometrist. Furthermore, almost half of those children who fail the vision screening at school also fail to go to an optometrist to seek the care the desperately need to succeed in academics and sports.
